This is not software you sort of fiddle around with. People using Resolve generally know what they're doing and the application certainly expresses that.

But when you discover you have dozens of filenames containing quotes, which could prove troublesome down the road if you're exporting to other formats, the easiest solution is just to batch rename all of them with a Python/bash script or an app, find all offline clips in Resolve (another thing which should be easier to do) and then handle the relinking from there. I know that exporting to CSV uses the Clip Name field, not the File Name field. I had to rename the file in the Finder, reimport it, reassign all the metadata already entered for the file in Resolve, and then delete the original clip in the Media Library (I can't use Relink to point to the new filename, and Replace Selected Clip erases all the custom metadata in the original clip). without metadata appearing in the wrong fields and ghost entries created in the wrong places.Ĭases where I needed to change the filename itself proved to be especially annoying. Since I've discovered this issue mid-project, I have spent literally hours hunting down clips with special characters in order to massage the file into something that can be viewed properly, i.e. The CSV file with the clips I use currently has over 2500 lines. Some of the files even have quotation marks in the actual filename. And currently, Resolve doesn't handle these characters properly when exporting CSV files. This can include several lines of information which often includes linefeeds and quotation marks.
Many of these files, when imported, automatically populate the Description metadata field with whatever information the provider has entered. The filename conventions used by these sources vary wildly and most of the time shouldn't be tampered with, so that full-res footage can be ordered properly when the edit is locked. Rather, it's entirely composed of archival footage in the form of low-resolution screeners obtained from dozens of different archival sources. The project I'm working on doesn't have any camera footage. Although I understand some of the reasoning behind it, especially regarding the impact on collaboration, I believe this decision has some consequences that haven't been thought of and have no easy workaround. There has been one major issue, which has been discussed on this forum before, on which I'd like to contribute my 2c.Īs I understand it, the developers have stated clearly that they don't plan on allowing users to rename media files.

The experience has been pretty solid so far and I'm pretty happy with the way the application works and behaves (I'm using the free version for now).
I'm editing my first project with Resolve after 15 years working with MediaComposer, FCP, FCPX and Premiere.
